Clean Up on Aisle Eight!

Have you ever done something so embarrassing you just wanted to crawl into a hole and disappear from the rest of the world? Last week I had one of those moments and I want to share it with you. And let me preface it by saying that I happen to attract those “why me” moments quite often in life…

Last Wednesday morning I got up early to take my husband to work. Since I was already awake, I decided to be productive and get my errands done early.

Can you guess where my first stop of the morning was? Yep, Starbucks! Because all productive days start with a lovely cup of coffee. After going to Sprouts for some fresh flowers and fruit, I headed to the commissary (our grocery store on base) to finish up our shopping list.

After I had checked out, I was loading up my cart with all of the purchases. The last thing to be added was a 4-pack of Dr. Pepper in glass bottles. I grabbed the soda with a little force and immediatley the bottles slipped through the bottom of the cardboard. As quickly as I realized what was happening, the bottles hit the ground, shattered all over the place, and glass went flying! When I looked down, I realized I couldn’t move because I had glass all over my legs and feet and I was bleeding. Someone gave me some napkins and eventually a chair so I could sit down and try to get my life together. But y’all, I was a wreck.

Then I met the sweetest lady. She happened to be checking out at the same time as me and she saw the entire thing happen. When she finished checking out, she quickly came over to me. She sent someone to get a replacement of Dr. Pepper since I had already paid for it and she even sent someone to wash off my shoes that were covered in soda and broken glass. She then said, “I’m not leaving you until your husband gets here.” WHAT AN ANGEL.

Thankfully, my amazing husband was taking his lunch break and he came to my rescue. I felt such a sense of relief when he came up behind me and gently put his hand on my shoulder to let me know he had arrived. Aren’t husbands the best?!

The manager of the store insisted that we call 911 and have them come check everything out. Probably more for their safety than my own, but I don’t blame them for it. So here I am, in the middle of the commissary (and at the busiest time of day, I might add!) sitting in a chair surrounded by 7 EMT’s, the fire chief, 4 grocery store clerks, my legs bleeding, and everyone staring! Not to mention, they had to close FOUR check out registers because of me.

All I could think was “Way to go, Aimee. You really outdid yourself this time!”

And then I nearly died of humiliation and will never be able to show my face at the commissary again.

Y’all, it was awful. It was embarrassing and sad and funny all at the same time. Well, let’s be honest, it wasn’t funny right then. But we sure have gotten a lot of laughs from it since then. And I hope it brings some laughter into your life today, too!
